“For a long time, people were saying that most accidents were due to human error and this is true in a sense but it is not very helpful. It is a bit like saying that falls are due to gravity.” -Dr. Trevor Kletz

Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, your safety should always be a paramount concern. After all, whenever you gamble with safety, you bet your life, so it is imperative that you take all the necessary precautions to ensure that you are safety. Such is the case with LPG suppliers in the Philippines where their biggest concern lies in the safety of their consumers. These suppliers would see this as their main priority considering that their consumers are their biggest assets. Apart from this, any mishap and miscalculation on their part can have lasting detrimental effects such as unimaginable loss and in the worst case, damage or death of individuals. Although your safety may be your provider’s utmost concern, they cannot enforce it alone and would need cooperation from you. Given LPG’s widespread use–from major industries to households–it is crucial that as consumers, we follow practices that would help prevent any accidents or untoward incidents. Here are some safety tips and precautions you must keep in mind when you use LPG:

LPG Safety Precautions in Any Given Situation

  • Your LPG cylinder’s cap and safety seal should be securely fixed to your gas cylinder. This is imperative as it ensures that your LPG cylinder is safe to use.
  • Always ask for a demo from your delivery man when you are unsure of a procedure as they know better than you do.
  • Although it is common to drag, drop and roll your cylinder, it is not advisable. Additionally, LPG cylinders should be placed on a plain surface and fixed at ground level.
  • Heat cylinders should be kept as far away as possible from the LPG cylinder. Things such as induction cooker, lamps that are lit should be placed in areas away from your cylinder.
  • After cooking, always remember to turn your regulator knob to the off sign.
  • Ensure that the rubber O-ring inside the cylinder valve is intact. Moreover, it is advisable that you change the rubber tube once every six months.
  • When looking for leakages, never use match-sticks, lighters or candles.
  • Empty cylinders have their safety cap in place. They should be stored in airy and cool spots

During Suspected Leakages:

  • In the event of a leakage or a suspected one, do not attempt to turn on or off any electrical appliances in the kitchen.
  • In a leakage, remember to put out all lights and flames.
  • Turn off your appliance and LPG regulator. Put the safety cap on the cylinder immediately after turning the regulator off.
  • Contact your LPG supplier as soon as possible.
  • Ensure there is proper ventilation by opening all the windows and doors. However, do not turn on the electric or exhaust fans.

LPG Cylinder Safety Tips for Daily Life

  • Your equipment should be routinely serviced as there are a lot of instances where accidents and untoward incidents can be avoided simply by a simple inspection. More often than not, we feel that a quick home fix should do the trick, but routine inspection should be done only by professionals. Additionally, apart from the regular check, make sure periodic maintenance checks are also done.
  • To prevent accidental leaks, purchase safety utilities which can be found in most markets.
  • To avoid the likelihood of fires, ensure that there are no curtains in proximity to your stove.
  • Any other fuel should not be kept next to your LPG cylinder—most especially kerosene.
  • Flammable materials should not be kept in the kitchen. Moreover, they should not be kept anywhere near your LPG cylinder.
  • Electric fans or exhaust fans should never be used to disperse a gas leak as this may cause a spark leading to an explosion.
  • As an added precaution, it is highly advisable to install gas detectors in the kitchen. In the event of a gas leak, this would raise an alarm and cause you to alert the suppliers immediately.
  • Do not attempt to manually transfer gas from one cylinder to another as this may result in gas leaks.
  • In no case should you ever buy gas cylinders from the black market? They might come in cheaper, but these cylinders are not thoroughly checked for safety purposes.
