What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer, also known as carcinoma of the prostate, is the development of cancer in the prostate, is a walnut-sized gland in the male reproduction system, located between the bladder neck and the urinary passage (urethra). Digital rectal examination – A DRE is a physical exam of the prostate. During a DRE, your GP will insert a lubricated and gloved finger into your rectum. The rectum is close to your prostate gland, so your GP can check to feel if the surface of the gland has changed. This test examines the lower rectum and the prostate gland in males to check for abnormalities in size, shape or texture.
Blood test – Patients suffering from prostate cancer, inflammation of prostate or benign prostate enlargement may have raised level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA).
Biopsy – Biopsies of the prostate gland are normally done with ultrasound guidance. These are often done in a systematic way to remove a small amount of tissue with a needle from representative areas throughout the prostate gland.
Prostate Ultrasound – This imaging test, also called transrectal ultrasound, provides images of a man’s prostate gland and surrounding tissue. A small ultrasound probe will be inserted into the rectum to measure the size and detect abnormality of the prostate. The probe sends and receives sound waves through the wall of the rectum into the prostate gland which is situated right in front of the rectum.

Risk factors for Prostate Cancer

A risk factor is something that increases the risk of developing cancer. It could be a behaviour, substance or condition. Some people have higher risks of prostate cancer than others. You have to pay special attention if you fall within the following categories:

Age : over 50
Hereditary : Men with an immediate blood relative, such as a father or brother, who has or had prostate cancer, are twice as likely to develop the disease.
Exercise : men who regularly exercise have also been found to be at lower risk of developing prostate cancer.
Diet : prolonged intake of food with high calorie and high fat
Others : smoking, over-weighted and prostate diseases, etc.
